slave-grave-3FLORENCE-Florence/Lauderdale Tourism will offer a tour of the Forks of Cypress Plantation and Cemetery on Saturday, November 7 at 10 a.m.

The Forks of Cypress Plantation was one of the oldest Antebellum mansions in Alabama. It was built in 1822 by James Jackson, one of the first settlers in Lauderdale County and a friend of Andrew Jackson. Although the main house was destroyed by fire in 1966, the site has been placed on the Alabama chimmney-from-cherokee-cabinRegister of Landmarks and Heritage and the National Register of Historic Places. Local historian Harry Wallace, whose family once lived at the Forks, will lead the tour.

Participants should bring lawn chairs for the beginning portion of the tour. The second part of the tour will be a walk to the historic Jackson Cemetery nearby.

Directions to the site are as follows: take Cox Creek Parkway to Jackson Rd. and turn right (no traffic signal at intersection). Turn right at the dead end. Park along the road or enter the gate to park in the field leading to the columns.
