FLORENCE-Author Dr. Hilda Dulin Lee will share her personal experience with binge eating disorder (BED) at this book talk and signing for her book In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating. She will also share some of the fascinating science behind this eating disorder and dispel some of the dangerous myths surrounding it. The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library will be hosting this event on Thursday, November 3 at 5:30 P.M.
“Food soothed an ache I couldn’t name, a pain I couldn’t describe,” says Lee in her book. It was not until she was diagnosed with binge eating disorder (BED) in 1998 that she began to understand that her destructive eating pattern was not the result of some shameful character flaw. Once she understood that there were real physical and psychological underpinnings to her behavior, she was able to set her course for healing.
Binge eating disorder, affecting more than 8 million Americans, is the most
prevalent eating disorder in the United States, more common that anorexia and bulimia combined. In addition, there are millions of others who don’t technically meet the criteria for BED but who are, nonetheless, greatly affected by binge eating at various times in their life. People suffering from binge eating consume unusually large amounts of food and experience feelings of loss of control and psychological distress.
Lee is a dentist who owned and managed a successful dental practice in Alabama, taught at her dental school, and conducted seminars and private consultations on practice management. After she was diagnosed with BED, Lee became interested in researching the science behind the disorder. She sold her dental practice, and returned to graduate school in North Carolina where she studied binge eating disorder and creative writing. Her mission with In Labyrinth of Binge Eating is to let others know they are not alone in their struggle with food, to help eliminate the shame and blame so often associated with the condition of binge eating, and to give hope and practical solutions to others who are lost in the same maze in which she was wandered for so many years.
