FLORENCE-On Saturday, June 22, 2024, around 5:30 p.m., Florence Police responded to the report of a burglary in the 400
block of Howell Street in Florence. When Officers arrived, two victims were located inside the residence with
multiple injuries.
Officers began providing the victims first aid, and care was transferred to Florence Fire and
Michael Kirkland Jr.
Rescue and Lifeguard EMS. The 79-year-old female resident was transported to UAB hospital by AirEvac, and a
76-year-old female was taken to North Alabama Medical Center. Both victims remain hospitalized.
Patrol Officers located a doorbell video of a suspect leaving the area. The suspect was identified as Michael Joe
Kirkland Jr., 34, of Florence. Evidence recovered connected Kirkman to the incident.
Michael Kirkland Jr. was arrested and booked on charges of Burglary in the First Degree, Sodomy in the First Degree, Robbery in the First Degree, and Assault in the First Degree. This is still an ongoing investigation, and additional charges are pending.
Kirkland is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bail pending an Aniah’s
Law hearing.
Michael Kirkland is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
