FLORENCE-On September 20, 2024, Florence proudly celebrated four remarkable individuals who have left a lasting mark on the world. Each is now honored at the Walk of Honor in River Heritage Park. This special landmark recognizes Florence and Lauderdale County natives who have gained national or international acclaim in various fields, from arts and sports to military service and technology.
This year’s inductees are:
- LTC Allen “Skip” Butler – A true hero and decorated helicopter pilot from the Vietnam War, credited with saving hundreds of lives and revolutionizing military aviation.
- Almeda Fowler – Florence-born actress who shined in both silent films and early talkies, including classics like A Star is Born and Party Girl.
- William “Bill” Yoast – The beloved high school football coach whose story of leading an integrated team became the inspiration for the iconic film Remember the Titans.
- Dr. Jeffery Lynn Briggs – Award-winning composer and game designer behind the legendary video game Civilization, touching the lives of millions worldwide.
