FLORENCE-Disney’s Newsies, Jr., will open the 2022—23 fine arts performance season for Florence Academy of Fine Arts (FAFA). Public performances will take place November 11and 12 at 7 p.m. and November 13 at 2 p.m. in the FHS Auditorium (1201 Bradshaw Drive, Florence, AL). Tickets are $15 for adults / $10 for students and available at gofans.com. School shows can be booked November 8 – 9 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Newsies, Jr., inspires audiences with a 60-minute musical based on the 1992 Disney film Newsies and the 2012 Broadway production of the same name on actual events in U.S. history. The rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of young Manhattan newsies inspires audiences of all ages. Set in 1899, the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsies’ expense, but Jack rallies young workers from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and to fight for what’s right! Adapted especially for young performers, this musical features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein. Look for electrifying songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “King of New York.” Newsies, Jr., packs non-stop thrills with a timeless message perfect for the whole family.

Celebrating the FAFA 10th year anniversary, Director Jerry Foster said. “Newsies, Jr., is a great choice for this year. It definitely demonstrates the versatility of FAFA talent and collaborative spirit. We are beyond blessed to have Director Matthew Kiel and the professional experience he shares with the students every day. And John Jackson as Technical Director, again, brings real world theatre quality into FAFA and Florence High School.” All fine arts departments at Florence High School:  Theatre, Technical Theatre, Dance, Chorus, Recording Arts, Songwriting, Fashion, 3D Design, TV Production and Photography work together to design and produce musicals for their student body and surrounding communities. This year Florence High School welcomes Cherise Albright in the Theatre Department and to the production team for Newsies, Jr.
