flplFLORENCE-The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library is hosting a fitness series for the month of June.  Also for your “book fix” there will also be a book signing in June and of course there will be more to come …so stay tuned!

Saturday, June 6, 12:00 – 3:00 pm
Local Author Jennifer Reynolds will be at the library to sell and sign copies of her novels. She writes post-apocalyptic fiction, paranormal romance, and thrillers. Her books include Shifter, Alone, and Him. For more information, call 256-764-6564, ext. 28.

Find Your Fit at FLPL
Summer 2015
We all want to be healthy and fit, but sometimes it’s hard to find a workout program that we enjoy and that we can fit into our schedules. With FLPL’s Find Your Fit series, you can try a wide variety of physical activities for free. Local fitness trainers will lead you in beginner workouts and give talks about benefits, safety, and how to get started. Most exercises in the series require little to no equipment, so there’s nothing to wait for–find your fit this summer at the library! Cycling is an excellent low-impact activity that can improve your cardiovascular health, as well as your strength and stamina. Plus, it’s fun! Timothy Wakefield from The Spinning Spoke Cycle Hub will help you get started by talking about equipment, basic maintenance, proper attire, proper fit, safety, nearby trails, and more.

The health of our bodies is closely connected to the health of our minds. For centuries, people have used meditation to release stress and find peace. Ashley Baker Haselton of Shoals Yoga will give a brief talk about the benefits of meditation and will lead you in a guided meditation session.

Yin Yoga

There are many types of yoga that emphasize different levels of strength and flexibility.
Sara Gaede, a yoga instructor at Mosaic: A Wellness Place, will introduce you to yin yoga, a slow-paced form of yoga that focuses on poses to increase flexibility and circulation in the joints. Yin yoga is excellent for beginners, for senior citizens, or for athletes who want to balance their strength with flexibility.
*Wear workout clothes. Bring a yoga mat if you have one.

PiYo combines the muscle sculpting of pilates, the flexibility of yoga, and the challenging pace of interval training. This combination creates a workout that burns calories, builds strength and mobility, and improves cardiovascular health. Kristin Bumpas of Anytime Fitness will talk briefly about the PiYo program and will lead you in a beginner PiYo class.

Running for Weight Loss and Fitness

You don’t have to be a trained athlete to be a runner: all you need is a good pair of shoes and a desire to get fit. B.J. Keeton, blogger at geekfitness.net, used running to help him lose 150 pounds. He will talk about how to get started as a runner, how to train for your goals, and how to beat that little voice that says you can’t. For those who are interested, B.J. will also provide one-on-one instruction on running form.
*Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes if you want running form instruction.
