FLORENCE-A reading and book signing for the book release of “Harper’s Bright Idea”, will be held at Season’s Restaurant, 1420 Huntsville Road in Florence, AL on September 28, 2019 at 12 noon.
“Harper’s Bright Idea” is a compelling and original children’s story, written by Shoals Area Author Mamie Thomas. It speaks of a child with an idea to improve her surroundings. In doing so, she inspires her family, as well as her community. This book exhibits love, relationships, and the beauty of family values.
The inspiration for “Harper’s Bright Idea” came primarily from the author’s family of 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Mamie Thomas’ work as the 10+ year former owner of First Step Pre-School, and her current work with Family Child Care Partnerships at Auburn University, also provided special insights. These experiences have made her aware that not all children have the love and support of family. The heartbreak of this fact, also served as encouragement to write this book.
Through this book, “Harper” develops and strengthens her relationships with a variety of characters; whether these relationships are with parents or grandparents, aunts or uncles, cousins or neighbors, teachers, or other positive adults in her life. Above all, it talks about the connections of family and friends.
The book is indicative of the author’s deep sentiment and respect for her family. Reflecting on the memories of the long, busy summers that her own grandchildren spent with her over the years, she states, “I could not think of my life without my family. I have truly been blessed.” She recalls memories of them going to Vacation Bible School, playing with the livestock on the family farm, working in the vegetable and flower gardens, fishing, and even on rainy days, we made jelly, jams, and a lot of pickles. She later realized that during these special times, the children were also learning patience, organizational skills, math, science, and problem solving skills that would serve them later in life.
So it is with “Harper’s Bright Idea”. Harper loves trees and flowers. One morning she gets a bright idea to make an empty field beautiful like her yard. Since she can’t do the job alone she asks for help. Can family and friends help her make the field bloom? Where will she get the flowers and trees, and the help to plant them? Can Harper make her bright idea real?
This book is a must read for anyone with young children, daycares, or elementary schools. All lessons learned, are shared with love, from Granddaddy and Granny’s house.
