acsTHE SHOALS – The American Cancer Society will hold an enrollment for its Cancer Prevention Study-3 in the Shoals area on November 12-14. The Cancer Society hopes to enroll over 200 area residents who have not had a previous diagnosis of cancer in this historic and life-saving study.

The goal of CPS-3 is to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, cancer studyand genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

“We are thrilled with the response we have received from the community so far and the amazing support from our host sites,” said Diane Peeples, Health Initiatives Representative for the American Cancer Society. “It is important for people to know that CPS-3 will give researchers the opportunity to study and learn more about cancer prevention. It will also help save members of future generations from this deadly disease.”

sign upSigning up requires a one-time in-person visit to read and sign a consent form, complete a survey, have your waist measured, and a small non-fasting blood sample as you would during a routine doctor visit. Participants will complete a more detailed survey at home and will continue to receive periodic follow-up surveys in the future that researchers will use to look for more clues to cancer’s causes.

Researchers believe CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks. However, its success depends on members of the community becoming involved.

Changes in lifestyle over the past several decades and a better understanding of cancer make this latest lifesaving series of studies a critical part of continuing the progress we’re seeing against the disease.
