HENDERSON, TN– Dr. Paul Helton, assistant professor of psychology at Freed-Hardeman University, has published two books for those who work with victims of sexual abuse or individuals who have suffered trauma due to sexual abuse. His new book entitled, “Released: Overcoming Sexual Trauma,” and its companion work, “Released: Overcoming Sexual Trauma Workbook,” can be ordered on Amazon.com.

“Released” is the true story of one individual’s struggle to survive years of sexual trauma. Katie Maurice’s abusers were family members and others she trusted. After being placed in a psychiatric ward, attempting suicide and constantly wishing for death, she made one last attempt to overcome. Having had four counselors who offered no solutions or relief, she made one final attempt to reach out for help. For both Katie and her new therapist, this would be the most trying and difficult journey of their lives.9781512209952_p0_v2_s192x300

The narrative follows the storyline of Katie’s struggle from hopelessness, despair and depression to fighting to reclaim her life. “It is my hope that those who have been traumatized by sexual abuse will be encouraged,” Helton said. The book is also designed for clinicians. “I believe the notes, comments and interchange with Katie will be most helpful in their work with trauma victims,” Helton added. He hopes this resource, along with the workbook, will be an asset to professors and students, enhancing critical thinking and dialogue.

Dr. Ryan Fraser, pastoral therapist, in a review of the book called it “riveting, brutally honest, gut-wrenching and insightful.” He said, “Dr. Paul G. Helton and Katie Maurice’s new book, ‘Released! Overcoming Sexual Trauma,’ is definitely not for the faint of heart. The book is unlike anything I have read before on the subject.”
