Female drummer denied first place in Iranian contest to perform at High Cotton Arts

daf-1ATHENS-Female drummer Golnaz Khazei began her musical training at age 10, and eight years later finished second place in a national musical tournament in Iran.

 

A female could not win first place.

 

Khazei is a native of Tehran, Iran, who now lives in Huntsville. She plays the Santour, a string instrument used in performing classical Persian music, and the Daf, a percussion instrument created by the Kurds of Iran and used in classical and Persian folk music.

 

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Khazei will play the Daf at High Cotton Arts in Downtown Athens during the monthly Listening Lounge hosted by Athens Arts League. The event is free and starts at 6:30 p.m. High Cotton Arts is located at 313 W. Washington Street across from the Limestone County Archives.
