Funeral services for Farrella “Nurse Jane” Burgess, age 87 of Lineville, will be held Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, with Bro. LC Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining Cemetery. She will lie in state at the church from 1:00 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.
Ms. Burgess was born in Calhoun County and grew up in the area. She raised her family traveling with her husband as he served in the AirForce. She brought her family back to Alabama in the early 60’s where she became a registered nurse. She was affectionately called “Nurse Jane” working at the Ashland Hospital, RMC and as the company nurse at Wellborn. She loved to read, write poetry, sketch and crochet.
She is survived by her daughters, Tess S. Scott of Lineville and Kathy (Ray) Headrick of Lineville; sons, Larry J. (Sabrina) Smith of Lineville and Roy (Jodie) Smith of Durango, CO ; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Lovella Nunnally, Martha Sue Ginn Middleton and Monzia Foshee; brother, Jimmy W. Pitts, several nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents: John Madison Pitts, Sr. and Irma B. Gamel Pitts; three siblings: Patricia Mintz, John Pitts, Jr and Jessie Pitts.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville is in charge of the arrangements.
