ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement concerning a false report of gunshots being fired at Wal-Mart in Athens. The gunshot incident was reported on April 11:
“On April 11, 2016 shortly before 23:00 the police department received a 911 call from a person reporting that there had been a person shot in the chest inside Wal-Mart. At the same time the police department received a second 911 call from a different person saying there had been a person shot inside Wal-Mart. Both callers hung up and dispatchers were unable to get either caller back on the phone. Officers arrived a short time later and were unable to locate any problem either inside or outside of Wal-Mart. The store manager on duty told officers there had been no problems.
Investigator Jonathan Caldwell started an investigation into the calls. He was able to use the phone numbers and other information he gathered to locate two suspects in the case. He talked with both the suspects that made the calls. They told Caldwell they made the calls because they thought they were going to be pulled over for speeding and they wanted to divert the police.
Caldwell obtained warrants for the arrest of Jacorien Marquay Jones and Desmond Kade Aycock for falsely reporting an incident. Yesterday both Jones and Aycock turned themselves in on the warrants. They were both arrested and bonded out. Falsely reporting an incident is a class A misdemeanor.”
