A Brief History of Education in Florence

2018 is Florence’s Bicentennial, and the focus for August is Education.
In this event, City Historian Billy Ray Warren will provide a brief history of education in Florence.
Florence has, since its founding in 1818, been an education town. By 1820, there was a school on the plantation of the John Coffee family to which other local children were invited as well. From that point to the establishment of the Florence City Board of Education in 1890, there were schools in private homes, in public buildings, and in churches. Along the way, there were three women’s colleges and, in 1855, the college at LaGrange in Colbert County moved to Florence and is known today as the University of North Alabama. In short, educational opportunities are a true hallmark of our great city.

Spring isn’t the only time to garden! Taylor Reeder of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will be teaching this year’s fall gardening series. All events are on Thursdays at 11:30 am.

YA for Adults Book Club: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

We know that adults love Young Adult (YA) novels, too, so geek out together with this book club! Adults 18 and over are invited to read and discuss each month’s selection. Booked for Lunch/Novel Conversations Book Clubs
Tuesday, August 14, 1:00 pm and 5:30 pm
This book club meets on the second Tuesday of each month, and we’re offering two different times to suit your schedule. The Booked for Lunch group will meet at 1:00 pm, and the Novel Conversations group will meet at 5:30 pm. For August, we’re discussing Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate.

FLPL will be hosting two events with author Lisa Patton, as she promotes her new novel, Rush. We’ll have more information about purchasing tickets for the Monday evening event soon.
