Evelyn Nell Butler, age 92, passed away peacefully in her home in Jackson, TN on August 14, 2023, with family members present.
Born on January 24, 1931, in the same town, she lived a remarkable life full of dedication, compassion, and kindness. Born to Bailey and May McCommon in Jackson, TN, Evelyn’s roots ran deep within the community where she spent most of her life. In 1942, at the age of 11, Evelyn was saved at Madison Baptist Church where she was a member for 81 years. Serving faithfully as a Sunday School teacher of children for many of those years. She shared countless memories in this town which she called home, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those around her. Her impact was not limited to a single place; it extended throughout the entire region.
Evelyn wore many hats throughout her life but found immense fulfillment in her career as a school bookkeeper, secretary, and office manager for South Side High School. For many years, she lent her administrative skills to the educational institution, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of students and colleagues alike. Her unwavering commitment to excellence earned her the respect and admiration of all who had the pleasure of working with her.
Beyond her professional achievements, Evelyn was an avid seamstress. With nimble fingers and an eye for detail, she created beautiful garments that demonstrated both her skill and creativity. Sewing provided her with solace and allowed her to express herself artistically. Her unique pieces were not only cherished by those close to her but also served as a testament to her talent and passion.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Jeal Butler Atwood, Johnnie Butler, Jr., and Jeff Butler; grandchildren, Todd Atwood, Troy Atwood, Trevor Atwood, Jeremy Butler, Jordan Butler, Jenna Butler Whittington, Blake Butler, and Stephanie Butler; as well as twenty great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as husband, Johnnie Butler, Sr. and siblings, Willie McCommon and Mildred McCommon Austin.
To honor Evelyn’s life, a celebration of life service will be held 2:15 p.m. August 19, 2023, at Madison Baptist Church in Jackson. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. A private family burial will follow.
