Evelyn Clark Lucas – Obituary

evelynEvelyn Clark Lucas, passed away Friday. She was born to William Henry Clark and Suzie Lester Clark of Delta, Alabama.

As a depression era child and post war bride, she had an enduring work ethic that began at Pepperell Manufacturing in Opelika Alabama, where she helped to support her husband through the completion of his degree from Auburn University. Thereafter in 1951, she moved to Huntsville and traded red clay for Redstone, where her husband had taken a position working with Dr. Werner von Braun, to help put man on the moon. Upon her arrival to Huntsville she immediately became active in the life of First Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher, and then as a nursery and Cradle Roll volunteer for more than 40 years. She lived her faith beyond her church through graceful service to others. For more than 40 years she served as an American Red Cross Volunteer at Huntsville Hospital, as well as Blossomwood, Huntsville Middle and Huntsville High Schools.

She saw the truth and beauty in God’s creation and diligently worked to make its beauty and wonder accessible to all. She was a Charter Member of the Blossomwood Garden Club, Founding Member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Huntsville Madison County, Huntsville Beautification Board and Founder, President, and Board Member of the Huntsville Botanical Garden. She also did so by mentoring others as a Master Gardener, Alabama and National Master Flower Show Judge and Chair of the Alabama Council of Landscape Design Consultants; and educating through her memberships and leadership in The Garden Club of Alabama, National Garden Club, Deep South Garden Club Conventions, and various Flower Show and Landscaping Design Schools. She also worked to support her pursuits and her family in positions with World Book, and Christmas markets for Giles, Brooks & Collier, Parisian Home Store, Botanical Garden Gift Shop, and real estate.

She is survived by her husband Jack Hobert Lucas, her daughters Linda Carol Lucas, Fran Lucas Fluhler, and her son David Vance Lucas and wife Michele; grandchildren, Ryan Lucas Hastings and wife Kathryn, Jason Nicholas Hastings and wife Samantha, Peter Matthew Hastings and wife Rachel, Sarah Elisabeth Barbre and husband Robert, Rebecca Anne Fluhler, James David Fluhler and wife Morgan; Willoughby Lucas Hastings and husband Joshua, Fisher Vance Lucas and Emma Michele Lucas; great grandchildren Hannah, Abigail, Franklin, Avishama, Sarayah, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 7th from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at First Baptist Church, with the service following at 1:00 p.m. A family graveside service will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the Huntsville Botanical Gardens and Foundation or First Baptist Church.

Praying for you all. Aunt Evelyn was wonderful example of the Proverbs 31 Woman. She was precious. I will be thinking of you on Tuesday, so sorry I can not be there. Blessing of Peace & Comfort be to you all through our Savior, Jesus Christ.
