Eva Mae Scates was born on February 19, 1960 to the late Willie and Lovie Conley in Gibson County, Tennessee.
She accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Porters Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Humboldt, Tennessee.
She was a graduate of Humboldt High School Class of 1978. She continued her education at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee where she was a Cum Laude graduate receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1982. She worked in the Humboldt City and Madison County School Systems for a few years before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Later moving to Cheverly, Maryland where she taught elementary education at Cheverly Elementary School.
After deciding that she did not want to continue a career in elementary education, she began to work at Montgomery Ward as a cash accounting associate for years before returning to Humboldt, Tennessee. After coming back, she worked at Emerson Manufacturing, Wilson Sporting Goods Co., Pierce Distribution Service Co., and Chicago Metallic where she retired from in February 2022.
She married Waymon Carter, and to that union one child was born: Kwanda. She later married Clarence “Rick” Scates to that union one child was born: Eric.
She leaves to cherish her memoires her husband Clarence “ Rick” Scates, two children Kwanda ( Curtis) King of LaVergne, Tennessee and Eric ( Ashlen) Scates of Clarksville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren Alexis Wynne, Myrical Wilson, Emryn Scates, Ja’Brien Washington, Aneal Scates, Cahlise Scates, Kahlani Scates and Chandler Davis; three brothers Jimmy ( Robbie ) Sheffield of Jackson, Tennessee, Tony ( Sylvia) Conley of Memphis, Tennessee, Thomas ( Venita ) Conley of Dyer, Tennessee; four sisters Shirley Pledge of Memphis, Tennessee, Deborah Morgan, Bertha Shutes and Joyce Shutes of Humboldt, Tennessee; one nephew James ( Sylvia) Conley of Mesa, Arizona that was raised as a brother and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lovie and Willie Conley, her grandchild Cordarius Wynne, and sister Linda Merriweather.
