Eula Clyde Johnson was born May 11,1923 in Cleburne County, Alabama on the Howell Place to Reuben and Pauline Hill. The fourth of nine children, she transitioned to eternal life on March 28,2024 at Huntsville Hospital.
She was reared in a Christian home where the family attended the Macedonia Baptist Church. She confessed Christ as her Savior at an early age and was baptized in the Tallapoosa River.
Eula Clyde grew to be a fine young lady and became the apple of Claude Bart Johnson’s eye. On May 3, 1941, they were united in Holy Matrimony. Nine children were born to this blessed union (John Edward, Gertrude, Judy, Susie Ann, Marvel JaFaye, Charles Norris, Claude Baxter, Michael Anthony, and James Kenneth). Their oldest son, John Edward preceded Eula Clyde in death.
Her husband Claude was called to preach the Gospel and managed to be both preacher and farmer for many years. He finally stopped planting cotton because he was losing money. Eula Clyde supported him on the farm and in his ministry as he traveled preaching revivals and pastoring four churches simultaneously.
Although she didn’t finish school, she taught her children to read and later attended Adult School – receiving her G.E.D. In addition to being a loving mother and a faithful wife, she also worked outside the home at various times as a housekeeper, a caregiver and as a cook. Known to many as “Mama Clyde,” she never met a stranger! She not only taught her children valuable life lessons, but she played with them as well. On Sunday evenings after church, the family frequently played baseball and Mama Clyde taught us all the rules of the game. Even in her senior years, she wanted to be the first batter up!
Sewing, quilting, cooking, visiting the sick, and running errands for those who could not drive kept her busy as she lived out her missionary calling. In the local church, she taught children, served in the Missionary Society, visited and cared for the sick and did what she could to honor God and love His people.
Her long life and rich legacy will continue to be cherished by her children Gertrude Stevens of Oxford, Alabama, Judy (Isaac) Edmond of Huntsville, Alabama, Susie Ann Johnson of San Francisco, California, Marvel JaFaye Jackson of Mobile, Alabama, Charles Norris Johnson of San Francisco, California, Claude Baxter Johnson of Heflin, Alabama, Michael Anthony Johnson of San Francisco, California, and James Kenneth (Jewelyn) Johnson of San Francisco, California; twenty-five grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren, and eighteen great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends-as well as the Macedonia Baptist Church Family.
The funeral service will be 12:00 noon, Saturday, April 6, 2024 at the Macedonia Baptist Church- Heflin (123 County Road 927 Heflin, AL 36264), S.M. Goodson Funeral Homes and Crematory, directing.
Public viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2024 at the S.M. Goodson Funeral Homes and Crematory- Anniston (830 Noble Street Anniston, AL 36201).
Mrs. Eula Clyde Johnson is the mother of Mrs. Judy Edmonds of Huntsville, AL.
