Mr. Ernest Thomas Connally, age 89 of Gurley, died Tuesday. Mr. Connally was born to the late Thomas King Connally, Jr. and Alvie (Short) Connally. A native of Quinton, Oklahoma, he was raised by his Aunt Laura and Uncle Willis Sanford of Ryland, AL. He was an Aviation Machinist’s Mate Third Class in the U.S. Navy and served active duty in World War II. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, receiving certification in drafting and was an active member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local 48. He loved fishing and Alabama football.
Mr. Connally is preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Margaret (Sanford) Connally, and sisters, Willie (Connally) Hill and Myrtle (Connally) Ikard.
He is survived by his two daughters, Phyllis Connally Williamson and Carol Connally-Walters and husband Wayne, four grandchildren, Jennifer Ward, and husband Ernie, Leslie Van Sant, and husband Richard, Emmaline Walters-Barnhill, and husband Bryan, and Connally Sanford Walters, four great-grandchildren, Rachel Ward, Christian Ward, Nate Van Sant, and Lily Van Sant, and many special nieces and nephews.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville. A graveside service will be held at Gurley City Cemetery, Thursday at 1:00 PM with the Reverend Charles McCay officiating.
