Ernest Lee “Bud” Winkles – Obituary

Ernest Lee “Bud” Winkles passed away September 7. Bud was born in Merrimack Village and grew up on farms around Huntsville with his eight brothers. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at 17, and enlisted in the Navy in WWII. Bud was twice rescued when his ships were torpedoed in the Atlantic, and was present at the D-Day invasion. He joined the Scouts and Raiders and was in Asia at the war’s end. Discharged from the Navy, he later served with the Army motor pool in the Korean war. For his military service, Bud was awarded two Bronze Stars and received other medals.

Following his discharge he continued his work as an auto mechanic. He enjoyed the outdoors, including fishing, camping and gardening, but mostly enjoyed people. He was hospitable and always sought to uplift those with whom he came in contact. Bud was a long-time member of Hillsboro Heights Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers, and wife, Lowess McMurtrie. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Maebelle Winkles; brothers, Pete and Fred Winkles; numerous nieces, nephews, and their progeny; a special nephew, Tommy McMurtrie; and a very special young friend, Jeb Moore.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Joshua Posey officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
