Elizabeth (Libby) Anne Glasscock McDaniel, 60, of Florence, Alabama, passed away
December 12, 2012. Libby’s faith, family, friends, church, and students were of utmost importance to her.
The visitation for family and friends will be at Greenview Funeral Home on Monday, December 17, 2012, 5 to 8 pm. The funeral will be Tuesday, December 18 at 1:30pm, First United Methodist Church Florence, Alabama with Reverend Mike Pope officiating. Family will receive friends at a reception in the church following services. Interment will be in Greenview Memorial Park.
Libby is survived by her husband, Pelter Clark McDaniel of Florence; mother, Marjorie Hudson Glasscock; brothers, Sam Harold Glasscock (Lorraine) and John Owen Glasscock all of Florence; nieces, Dr. Leigh Marie Seamon (Jason) of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Krista Kathryn Glasscock of Atlanta, Georgia; great niece, Samantha Ruth Seamon and great nephew, David Michael Seamon both of Grand Rapids, Michigan; children, Lori Clepper (David) of Molena, Georgia and Carter McDaniel (Ashley) of Killen, Alabama; grandchildren, Jordan Clepper and Sawyer-Ann Clepper of Molena, Georgia and Ethan McDaniel of Killen, Alabama; uncle, Jere Samuel Hudson of Huntsville, Alabama; mother-in-law, Gertie McDaniel Grissom of Florence, Alabama; sister-in-laws, Mary Kathryn Scarborough (Jim) of Vancouver, Washington and Nancy Gilmore (Jimmy) of Birmingham, Alabama and brother-in-law Ray McDaniel (Dottie) of Grand Junction, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Owen Glasscock and grandparents, Sam and Beatrice Coburn Hudson and James Fletcher and Ada Sharp Glasscock. She was blessed to be nurtured by numerous members of her extended family of the Glasscock, Hudson, Coburn, Sharp, and McDaniel families.
Libby was a member of Florence First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Almon Sunday School Class and Wesley Ringers Bell Choir. Formerly she was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church where she taught first grade Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years and was in the Bell Choir and Coleman Sunday School Class. Her faith was also strengthened by being a member of the Shoals Emmaus Community.
Libby taught kindergarten in Athens, Alabama at Julian Newman Elementary School for 38 years and was selected as Elementary Teacher of the Year for Athens City Schools during her career. She was dedicated to her young students and the teaching profession. She also was an adjunct instructor in elementary and/or early childhood education at Athens State University for approximately 20 years. A native of Florence, Alabama, Libby graduated from Bradshaw High School in 1970 where she excelled in academics and was very involved in extracurricular activities. Her college degrees were earned in elementary and/or early childhood education at Florence State University (B. S., 1974), University of Alabama (M.A., 1977), and University of North Alabama (Ed.S., 1985). At Florence State University she was the first recipient of both the Keller Key for academics and the Turris Fidelis Award for service.
Pallbearers will be David Clepper, Carter McDaniel, Dr. Jim Scarborough, George Perkins, John Cecil Hudson, and Alan Davis. Honorary Pallbearers; Dr. Jason Seamon, Steve Cook, and Darin Aderholt.
