Elisabeth Ann Downer, age 90 of Fort Payne, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. She was born on November 7, 1934 in Germany to the late Anton & Clara Witt Gnatowski. Elisabeth’s family ran for their lives in the dark of the night during the Russian bombing of their town. She never saw most of them again. She would later meet Jerome Downer in England, who was in the United States military. He would bring her to American, where she became a naturalized citizen, after the war and became his faithful wife for 59 years. She called him Hubert. They had a son, Michael Downer and step-son, Ronald Downer. Hubert and Elisabeth were both very hard workers. Elisabeth liked to clean houses for people. They made lifelong friends wherever they traveled. They liked to sing hymns with family and friends and they sang with the seniors, visiting nursing homes and senior centers for many years. She was a member of Hammondville Church of God 7th Day.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Monday, December 2, 2024 at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Fischer Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. hour of service.
She is survived by two grandchildren, Christopher Downer and Kara Downer.
Mrs. Downer was preceded in death by her husband; son and step-son; parents; and 11 brothers & sisters.
