ElbertElbert (Jr.) Brooks

Mr. Brooks was born in Lauderdale County, TN the son of the late Elbert and Lucille Newsom Brooks. He was raised and educated in Ripley, TN. He had worked in the plywood business since he was seventeen, and was a co-owner of the McKnight Plywood in West Helena, Arkansas and later purchased a plywood plant in Dickson, TN.

After retiring from the plywood business, he and his wife of fifty years, Frances Barton Brooks moved to Chester County and operated Sweetlips Grocery and he drove a school bus for Chester County Board of Education for twenty three years. Mr. Brooks had owned a farm in Chester County for many years, coming here every weekend to tend to his cattle and other farm chores. His farm was his recreation.

He was a Baptist, but had attended Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances (Barton) Brooks of Henderson, TN; three daughters, Paulette Wallace and husband Sammy of Luray, TN, Penny Helton of Dickson, TN, Diane Clement and husband Peter of Chattanooga, TN; a sister, Betty Bizzell of Ripley, TN; two brothers, Tom Brooks of Memphis, TN, Larry Brooks of Memphis, TN and seven grandchildren, Michael Wallace, Heather Wallace, Courtney Taphorn, Leslie Helton, Hillary Green, Cale Clement and Caroline Clement and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on January 15, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors-Johnson Chapel in Henderson, Tennessee, with Bro. Andy Maness and Bro. Marcus Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in the Chester County Memory Gardens at Henderson, Tennessee.

The family will receive friends at Johnson Chapel 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to American Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
