Edith Toogood, 88, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022 in Fairfax, Virginia. Edith was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Ramsey High School and continued her education at Birmingham Southern Conservatory of Music where she graduated with a degree in music. She attended First United Methodist Church and participated in the choir. In 1959, Edith, her mother, and brothers moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where Edith pursued her love of music as a well-loved music teacher. She also taught piano and voice to students of all ages for many years and was adored by all her students and their families. She was an active member at Christ Church in Ft. Lauderdale where she also enjoyed sharing her musical gifts. She was a member of the Ft. Lauderdale Women’s Club where she served as the chair of the Scholarship Committee for many years. She loved socializing with her friends, attending musical and theatrical performances, loving her pets, visiting with family – most especially her granddaughters – and enjoying the Florida weather. She was preceded in death by her father, David N. Smith Sr., her mother, Adina B. Smith, and two brothers, Mack Smith and David N. Smith Jr. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Granberg (Chris) of Clifton, VA; granddaughters, Abigail and Caitlin; and brother, Thomas Smith of Boynton Beach, FL, Her life well lived will be celebrated Monday, March 7, 2022. Visitation will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home from 10:00-10:30AM immediately followed by an intimate graveside service at her final resting place in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to support scholarships at Birmingham Southern for music students, The Alzheimer’s Association, or your favorite church music or food ministry program.
