Edgar Nicholas “Nick” Moon – Obituary

NickEdgar Nicholas “Nick” Moon died peacefully on February 22, 2015, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 83.

Nick is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donnie Phelps Moon; children, Nick, Pat, Joe, and Mike; siblings, Wilner Richards, Laura Parrish, and Oscar Nell Coley. Nick had 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Reedy Moon, Zeta May Moon, and stepmother Vera Moon; and sibling, Robert (Bobby) Moon.

Nick was born on December 30, 1931, in Notasulga, Alabama, to Oscar and Zeta Moon. He graduated from Auburn University in 1954 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He married Donnie Rae Phelps, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, in 1952. After moving to Mobile, Alabama, Nick began working for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. His 33-year career with the Corps included leadership positions in Huntsville, Al, Cape Kennedy, Fl, Seoul, Korea, Tel Aviv, Israel, Columbus, Ms, and Ft. McClellen, Al. After retiring from the Corps he worked as a contractor for Quality Assurance Associates in Anniston, Al, and then Sverdrup Corporation in Pretoria, South Africa.

After a highly decorated professional career that included work on the design and construction of projects, such as launch and landing facilities for NASA, a US embassy, military air bases in foreign countries, the Tennessee Tombigbee waterway, and decontamination facilities on military bases, he found some of his greatest joy in the design and construction of garages, storage buildings, lawn sprinkler systems and lake docks. He was a generous and dedicated individual who volunteered at the Second Mile Neighborhood Store and was passionate about improving the facility in many ways, including building modifications and construction of display shelving. He was a member of the Cove United Methodist Church. His children remember him as a kind, gentle, and patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals and always stretch their expectations.

Visitation is scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Wednesday followed by a memorial service beginning at noon in the chapel of Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville. Rev. Bill Etheridge will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nick’s life.
