Reverend Edgar Jackson, 83, formerly of Florence, died Wednesday, February 13, 20190 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was the sixth of eight children born to Mr. Gibb and Mrs. Annie Jackson. His siblings were James, Jasper, Georgia, Maggie, Annie, Billy and Gloria. The family lived on Burgess Street and were staunch members of St. Paul AME Church.
Edgar’s education was received in the Florence schools where he excelled in music being a pianist and drummer for the Burrell Marching Band. In 1951 the family moved to Lima, Ohio; he attended Wilberforce University and in 1958 was drafted into the military. He served in the same unit with Elvis Presley in West Germany.
He subsequently located to California and upon receiving GOD’s summons to become a minister, he pastored many AME churches for more than 55 years. Reverend Jackson was a distinguished pastor who earned recognition for his outstanding community outreach. In retirement he served as supply preacher and musician for several Los Angeles churches.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Primm AME Church in Pomona, California.
He is survived by his son, Erroll of Las Vegas; brother, Billy of Lima; two sisters, Maggie of Houston, Texas and Gloria of Lima; and dear friends from Florence, WL Smith, Anita Smith Cobb and Eddie Bessie Crayton.
