Mr. Dwight M. Jett, Sr., age 73, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday morning, July 15, 2015 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.
Mr. Jett placed a great amount of trust and confidence in the ability of the physicians and staff at Mayo Clinic after receiving successful treatment of a rare cancer in 1991. Unfortunately, this cancer returned and went undiagnosed for several months until Mr. Jett sought treatment at Mayo Clinic. He succumbed to the cancer before Mayo was able to begin treatment. His family will forever be grateful to Mayo Clinic for the care, treatment and compassion he received from every employee he came in contact with at Mayo Clinic in 1991 and during his recent time of care at their facility.
Mr. Jett was one of twelve children born to the late Lemuel George and Rosa Rebecca Gray Jett. He attended Austinville High School until it closed after his junior year and he then graduated from Decatur High School in 1960. After high school he attended Tennessee Valley Trade School (Calhoun Junior College) where he received his machinist certification. Thereafter, he worked for Stauffer Chemical Company in Huntsville and Fruehauf in Decatur until 1972 when he joined the staff of the United Steel Workers Union where he served as a union representative until retiring in the mid-1990s. Upon retiring from the Union, he became a cattle farmer and managed his rental properties. In addition to his farm and rental properties, he was an avid fan of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Mr. Jett attended Spring Avenue Church of Christ with his wife. Those who knew Mr. Jett, knew him to be a hard working man who stood up for what he believed.
Having died on his 54th wedding anniversary, he leaves behind, his wife, Pattie Jett of Decatur; two sons, Dwight M. Jett, Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Decatur and Walter Keith Jett and his wife, Teresa, of Decatur; a daughter, Rebecca Jett Colson and her husband, Scott, of Fernandina Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Emily Colson, Olivia Colson, Jonathan Jett and Anna Tyszka; two great-grandchildren, Luke Jett and Sommer Jett; siblings, Eugene Jett, Flora Nell Gregg, Bobby Ray Jett, Hoyt Jett, Glenda Thompson and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his constant and faithful companion and friend, Jack, his Blue Heeler.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Dwight “McKenzie” Jett, III and his siblings: Dennis Jett, Mildred Shelton, Travis Jett, Gertrude Polk, Carolyn Hames and Don Jett.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2015, in the Roselawn Funeral Home chapel.
