Duke Sniffs Out Drugs After Traffic Violation Stop

DECATUR-A routine traffic stop nets drug arrest by the Decatur Police Department.  Here is how the Decatur Police describe events leading up to the arrest of one person:

“On January 15, 2015, members of the Decatur Police Department’s Anti-Crime Unit were patrolling in the area of Beltline Rd near Westmeade Dr. SW. Officer Kitchens and Sgt. Hammons conducted a traffic stop at that location for moving violations (Multiple Lanes and Following Too Close). During the course of the investigation, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Jasmine Georgianna Poff.
Officer Jackson, Officer Fuller and Canine Officer Swoopes arrived on scene to assist. Officer Swoopes deployed his canine “Duke” on a sniff of the outside of the vehicle. “Duke” showed an odor response to the presence of narcotics coming from inside the vehicle. During a search, Officers located a quantity of prescription medication (controlled substance) that Poff did not have a valid prescriptions for. Officers also located a quantity of marijuana inside the vehicle.
Poff was placed under arrest and transported to the Decatur Police Department where she was processed in. Poff was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree, Illegal Possession of Prescription Drugs, Open Container, Multiple Lanes, and Following Too Close.
Poff will later be transferred to the Morgan County Jail in lieu of a $5,000.00 bond.”
