Drowning+TragedyTUPELO-Lee County Sheriff Jim H. Johnson released a statement on the drowning that occurred at the boat ramp in Tombigbee State Park on Wednesday, June 15:

“At 12:30 this afternoon 911 dispatched our office to Tombigbee State Park for the recovery of an individual that was last seen near the boat ramp.

A witness stated that she saw a male subject in the lake, near the boat ramp, struggling to get back to the bank.

Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Tupelo Fire Department, Lee County Sheriff Department and several volunteer fire departments searched the area. An unoccupied boat was found intact in the lake several feet away from the boat ramp.

Around 3 o’clock this afternoon the body of a white male subject was recovered from the lake. It appears this individual tried to retrieve his boat at the boat ramp when he went under. He was not wearing a life vest.

The body has been turned over to the county coroner. The identity of the victim will be released after notification to the immediate family.”
