ATHENS-Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement on the drowning accident at Summit Lake today, July 4th:
“Around 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, Athens Police and Athens Fire and Rescue responded to a drowning call at Summit Lake, at Lindsay Lane and Summit Lake Drive in eastern Athens.
Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said a 37-year-old male was in a kayak, which tipped over three times. The man was able to get back in the kayak twice but could not get back in the third time, Johnson said. A 20-year-old male took another kayak and went out to help but fell into the water, Johnson said.
Johnson said several people attempted to rescue the men. Officers and firefighters arrived and retrieved the two male adults from the lake and performed CPR. The 37-year-old man died at Athens-Limestone Hospital. The 20-year-old man was transported to Huntsville Hospital. Johnson said he does not know his condition at this time.
Police are not releasing their names pending notification of the family.”
