Doyce Pierce “Sonny” Mitchell, Jr. of Huntsville, passed away Monday, September 16, 2024, at the age of 60.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 35 years, Melissa Mitchell; children Zachary Mitchell (Morgan) of Huntsville and Collin Mitchell (Ashley) of New Market, as well as his grandchildren Piper, Everly, Maeve, Atlas, and Jude. He is preceded in death by his mother Gloria Faye Kelley, his father Doyce Pierce Mitchell, Sr. and his sister Lisa Fay Roberts.
Sonny was born on August 24, 1964 to “Faye” and Doyce, Sr. He graduated from the University of Alabama Huntsville with a Bachelor’s of Science Mechanical Engineering in 1989 and continued working at NASA where he had already previously served as a co-op. He married Melissa Ann Beltran in 1989 and the couple welcomed sons Zachary and Collin over the next few years.
His wife and sons remember him as the hard charging, big hearted and earnest leader that he was; someone who was not afraid to fully dive into any and all activities with his family and push them to be their best selves. He served as Scoutmaster for Troop 361 of Holy Spirit Church for years, during which time he mentored many young leaders.
Sonny greatly enjoyed camping and backpacking with his boys during scouts as well as all things Martial Arts. He was a 1st Degree Black Belt in Karate as well as a 1st Degree Black Belt in Bujinkan and actively studied and practiced Martial arts throughout the majority of his life. Sonny was also a voracious reader, greatly enjoying biographies of the great leaders of history, whose lessons he applied to his own life. He also loved working on cars and he and his friends would often convene at their hobby garage on the weekends to work on classic cars. Even in his downtime, Sonny enjoyed playing guitar. He was always learning something new or working to improve himself. Sonny will be sorely missed by all his loved ones and those who were fortunate to call him friend.
