Dorothy Ozell Roden Moore, age 88, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 11, 2013. She was raised on a farm on Sand Mountain to the late Nathaniel and Beulah Roden. She graduated as Salutatorian from Pisgah High School. At the urging of a friend at the young age of 19, she left Sand Mountain in search of employment. She and her friend rode a Greyhound bus from Scottsboro to Knoxville, where they disembarked and asked a policeman for directions to the Employment Office. They emerged a bit later as employees of Union Carbide. Dottie, as she became known to her friends, began her career with Union Carbide as a “Calutron girl,” operating the equipment for uranium enrichment on the Manhattan Project. She soon became supervisor of the group of women. She spent 42 years at the Y-12 facility from which she retired as a lab supervisor, at that time overseeing the work of four laboratories.

After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling extensively across the United States. She continued to be amazed at her life’s journey including her work on the Manhattan Project and God’s interventions in her life along the way. She was a faithful member of Edgemoor Baptist Church in Claxton for 50 years, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She continued to teach the ladies of the Golden Circle Sunday School class until December 2012. Dottie loved science and urged us all to think through things logically. She was a collector of words of wisdom which she shared, and a student of the Bible. In addition to her parents, Dottie is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Raymond Moore; brothers, Frenchie and John; sister, Lyda Jean.

She is survived by son, Randall and wife, Ann Moore of the Claxton community; grandchildren, Shelby and Bethany Moore, who were the light of her life; stepdaughter, Nyra “Pug” Daigle and husband, Jeff, of St. Francisville, La.; brother, Ted Roden and wife, Sue, of Norman, Okla.; sister-in-law, Polly Cooper and husband, Melvin, of Chattanooga; brother-in-law, Lawrence Moore of Harriman; several nieces and nephews, a host of friends.

The family is grateful for the excellent care provided by Dr. Victor McLaughlin over the past several years.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 tonight, May 15, 2013 at Holley Gamble Funeral Home with funeral services following in the chapel with Rev. Rick Miller officiating. The family will have a graveside service at 11 a.m. at Woodhaven Memorial Garden. Holley Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements. holleygamblefh.com
