Dorothy Oveda Stephenson Hammond – Obituary

Dorothy Oveda Stephenson Hammond, a longtime resident of Decatur, departed this life on April 1, 2015. She was born on May 16, 1922, in Leoma, Tennessee. She was the youngest of 15 children born to John Wesley Freeman Stephenson and Naomi Louisa Land Stephenson. She married Robert Elgar Hammond in 1940 and moved with him to Decatur where she was a homemaker and mother of three children. She was an active member of Ninth Street United Methodist Church for most of her life, attending the Spring Avenue Church of the Nazerene during her later years. She enjoyed the Christian fellowship and love from members of both congregations. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents and 14 siblings.
She is survived by her three children, Robert Thomas Hammond (Carol), Stephen V. Hammond (Shirley) and Vickie Hammond Rowden (Frank) and by five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Easter Sunday at Roselawn Funeral Home, beginning at 3 p.m. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at the
funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, P.O. Box 2745, Decatur, Alabama 35602 in
Mrs. Hammond’s memory.
