Ms. Dorothy Jean Allison of Cleveland, Ohio formally of Huntsville, Alabama better known as, “Aunt Dot” or just “Dot” was born to the late Mr. Jessie Allison and Mrs. Annie Mae Allison on September 17, 1933 in Madison County, Alabama. On Thursday, April 7, 2016, at the home of her great- nephew, Andrae Leslie, surrounded by family, Dorothy gently folded her arms and closed her eyes and stepped on board to the other side.
Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age, after relocating to Cleveland, Ohio. She later became a member of East Mt. Zion M.B. Church at 9990 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, under the leadership of Pastor A’Charles Bowie.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her sisters: Mrs. Bearth M. Leslie and Miss Louise Allison, her brothers: James Allison and Herbert Lee Allison; one great nephew: Mr. Gregory D. Douglas; and one great-great niece: Ms. Shanika Sade Scruggs.
Dorothy attended W.H. Council High School in her early years and later graduated from Ohio Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dorothy worked for the city of Cleveland for 44 years. She worked as a Health Inspector Technician, then progressed to Health Inspector to finally becoming an Assistant Supervisor. Ms. Allison was the first black female inspector during the Vietnam War, but she wanted everyone to know and understand that the main “Title” she was seeking didn’t come from man. Glory Be To God!
She leaves to cherish her loving memories, five nieces: Gloria J. Leslie, Kris S. (James) Douglas and A ’Renee Heard, all of Huntsville, Alabama, Marilyn Allison and Carolyn Allison, both of Chicago, Illinois; five nephews: LeeVon Leslie, Anthony (Bassie) Allison, Robert Heard, Sr., and Robert Douglas, all of Huntsville, Alabama and Michael Allison of Chicago, IL; seven great-nephews, four great-nieces, eight great great-nephews and five great great-nieces; three cousins: Mrs. Mary E. Scott of Louisville, KY, Shawn Smith of Florida and Walter T. Smith, Jr., of Atlanta, Georgia; Mrs. Bassie Riverington and her extended family of Cleveland, Ohio.
“Aunt Dot” had many, many friends and co-workers of Cleveland, Ohio and Huntsville, Alabama, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2016 at the Union Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church (3126 Nevel Drive NW, Huntsville, AL 35810) with Dr. Edward L. Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Northside Cemetery. Ms. Allison will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.
Public viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 14, 2016 and 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 15, 2016 at the Royal Funeral Home.
