Doris Pike Layne Died on Wednesday May 22, at the age of 90.
Doris is survived by her husband Billy and five adult children Don Smith (Jean) Athens, GA, Mike Smith (Terri) Huntsville,Al, Kathy Blevins Huntsville, Al, Larry Layne (Royce) Montgomery,Al, Keith Layne (Claudia) Huntsville, Al. Doris was blessed with 8 Grand Children Susan, Jubel, Carri Leigh, Joshua, Heather, Caleb, Grace, and Emma. Greatly blessed with four Great Children. Also survived by Brother, Kenneth Pike, Madison, and Sister ,Sara Knight, Monrovia.
Doris grew up in the Monrovia community of Madison County. Her early farm life taught her to work and appreciate family. When not working Doris enjoyed organized sports and was an accomplished softball and basketball player. Doris and her “Dr Pepper” girls softball team of the 40’s and 50’s were featured in a Huntsville Times story during the release of the movie “A League of Their Own” 1992. Doris played basketball on her company team, General Electric, at the Joe Bradley gym well into her 40’s.
Doris loved family gathering’s supporting her children in all activities and her heritage from Monrovia community and her beloved Dallas Mill community in North East Huntsville. Special recognition to Hospice Family Care, Huntsville for their excellent care and support of Doris and Billy in their home. Special thanks to the Jackson Way Baptist Church staff and lay people to include the Ester Sunday school for their months of love and support.
Service will be Saturday May 25, 1200 noon at Jackson Way Baptist Church, Huntsville, with burial at Maple Hill cemetery. Ministers Dr. Michael Cassity and Chaplain Anthony Ford. Visitation will be 1000 – 1200 at the church.
