Doris Ann Todd Smith of Guntersville was called home on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the age of 86. She is preceded in death by her husband Rufus Paul Smith, her parents Shirley and Lee Todd, sister Quilla Roden, brother Wayne Todd, and son-in-law Tony Poe. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Edge (Craig), her son, Greg Smith (Beth), her two sisters, Athene Gray and Jan Burke, her brother Billy Todd, three grandchildren: Chris Poe (Sharon), Mandy McCain (Sam), and Matthew Smith (Hannah), four great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Doris was born and raised in the Alder Springs community of Sand Mountain. She married the love of her life, Paul Smith from the East Lake community of Guntersville, on August 9, 1952, and they spent 66 years together before Paul was called home in 2018. Together they enjoyed a Christian life filled with love, understanding, and family.
Doris (or Mamaw as her family called her) was a true Southerner, blessed with a variety of talents that included playing the piano at church, quilting beautiful blankets still in use today, and canning food from the garden her and Paul (Papaw) tended to over the years together. But what she loved most in life was cooking delicious food and sharing it with her friends and family. You could smell the fresh biscuits and gravy, hot coffee, and peach fried pies as you were walking up to the door. The family would gather around, hold hands, Papaw would ask the blessing, and then we’d share a meal prepared with the love of a grandmother’s heart.
In honor of Mamaw Smith’s legacy, the family asks that you always hold your loved ones close and focus on the simple things in life together. Make a home-cooked meal, watch an episode of Gunsmoke, and spend a quite summer evening on the porch swing sharing the love that matters most: family.
Funeral service for Doris will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Adams Brown Service Funeral Home with Bro. Carey Sims, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Assisting Doris to her final resting place at Memory Hill Cemetery in Albertville will include; Mike Burke, Chris Poe, Matthew Smith, Johnny Roden, Phillip Todd and Sam McCain.
