MONTGOMERY-When the time comes to swap out the pumpkins on your porch for snowmen, be sure to save those pumpkins as special treats for your neighboring wildlife! Pumpkins, both whole and carved, are a great treat for backyard wildlife such as birds and squirrels. Placing them out in your backyard or the edge of the woods is the perfect place to attract wildlife. If the pumpkins are whole, consider cutting a hole or breaking it up into pieces so it is easier for critters to access. You can even add bird seed to the pumpkin, creating a natural bird feeder to attract more birds to the area.
If you don’t like the idea of having old pumpkins nearby, there are other options to benefit your yard. If you have a compost pile, simply add the broken pumpkins pieces to it, or if no compost pile is available, chop up your pumpkins and add them directly to your garden soil. This will help add fertilizer to your garden for future plantings.
Whether you want to feed your garden or the wildlife around you, saving those pumpkins from the trash is beneficial for all!
