Donnie Wayne Newton, 79, of Rogersville passed away at his residence on Monday, December 11, 2023. Donnie was a member of West Rogersville Church of Christ.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Hooie Bedingfield Cemetery. Chris Gautney will be officiating. The family requests casual dress.
Mr. Newton, a 1962 graduate of Lauderdale County High School, was a skilled craftsman who found joy in woodworking and success as an upholsterer for 42 years. During his 33 years as owner of Elgin Upholstery, he earned respect, leaving a lasting impression with his gentle nature and impeccable craftsmanship. Mr. Newton also served the students and families of Lauderdale County High School for 12 years as a school bus driver.
Mr. Newton was preceded in death by his parents, Homer, and Lorene Newton; infant twin brothers; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Hill.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nelda Newton; son, Jonathan Newton (Traci); grandson, Mason Newton; sister, Frances Hill; brother-in-law, Jimmy Romine (Glenda); nephews, Bryan Hill (Amy) and Brent Romine (Laura); nieces, Denise Olive (Jimmy) and Stephanie Romine; several great nephews and nieces, and a great-great nephew; and a host of other family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Newton, Mason Newton, Bryan Hill, Brent Romine, Jimmy Olive, Jacob Springer, Jimmy Mason, and David Greenfield.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from Compassus Hospice for their diligent and gentle care. In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by donations to the Elgin Senior Center or Elgin Volunteer Fire Department.
