Donald Key Reed, a longtime resident of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on March 12, 2024, at the age of 82. Don was born on April 10, 1941, in West Jefferson, Alabama to Nora and Amos Reed.

After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1965 with a degree in mechanical engineering, Don embarked on a distinguished career in aerospace engineering. He began working at Brown Engineering in Huntsville before moving to USBI, where he served as the head of the company, and finished his career as the Vice President of Engineering at United Space Alliance. Throughout his successful 50+ year career, he received numerous accolades, including being named Huntsville/Madison County Manager of the Year.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Don is survived by his wife, Martha; son, Dr. John David (Olivia); grandchildren, David and Annie; and sister, Patsy McCarty. Despite his professional accomplishments, Don’s true passion was the University of Alabama, where he remained an ardent fan of the Crimson Tide until his passing.

In his free time, Don loved playing golf, playing bridge, and gardening. He was a certified Master Gardener who took great pride in cultivating beautiful flowers.

Don led a life defined by hard work, integrity, an enduring love for his family, his alma mater, and the aerospace industry that allowed him to live out his childhood dreams of working on rockets and spacecraft. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18th at First Baptist Church Chapel of Huntsville, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Baptist Church of Huntsville.
