ATHENS-On October 4, 2025, at approximately 6:45 PM, Limestone County 911 received an emergency call reporting a domestic violence incident at a residence in the 14000 block of Westmeade Lane in Athens, Alabama.
The caller stated that a male suspect was armed with a knife and a firearm and was attempting to kill his wife.
Deputies responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, they attempted to make contact with the victim and suspect, identified as 51-year-old Andre Dupree Foster, who refused to open the door. Deputies were able to briefly speak with Foster through the door, during which he made statements indicating he was suicidal and continued to refuse to exit the residence.
Shortly thereafter, deputies heard a single gunshot from inside the home. Fortunately, it was determined that the female victim had already escaped and was safe at a neighborโ€™s residence.
Due to the seriousness of the situation and the presence of firearms, Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin, the Limestone County SWAT team, crisis negotiators, and the Athens Police Department responded to assist. Foster had barricaded himself inside the home and continued to resist surrender for several hours.
After nearly 12 hours of negotiations, Foster peacefully surrendered without further incident. He was taken into custody and transported to the Limestone County Jail, where he is charged with Domestic Violence 2nd Degree (Assault). Bond has not yet been set by a judge.
Statement from Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin:
“I want to sincerely thank the community for their patience and understanding as we worked through this dangerous and complex situation overnight.
I am incredibly grateful for the teamwork and professionalism shown by everyone who responded. Thank you to the Athens Police Department, East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department, and Athens-Limestone EMS for their support and assistance.
I would also like to thank Mr. Fosterโ€™s family for their cooperation, prayers, and help throughout the night. Because of everyone’s efforts, we brought this incident to a peaceful conclusion, and most importantly, without any loss of life.”
