Mr. Dixie Lee McMullen, of Gurley, AL, died on April 4, 2015. He was 89 years old.
Dixie is survived by his wife, Ripple McMullen of Gurley; brother, Blake McMullen (Lyla) of Hampton Cove; two daughters, Debbie Gamble (Randy) of Fort Payne and Donna Spiers (David) of Meridianville; two grandsons, Joe Allison and Charles Gamble (Jennifer); two granddaughters, Allison Gamble and Angela Allison; two great-grandsons, Joshua and Aiden Gamble. He is preceded in death by his father, Lawry McMullen, and mother, Hazel Blake, and sister, Jeanne Isaacson.
Dixie was a World War II Army veteran. He served in the 63rd Infantry where he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and Middle Eastern Service Medal. He worked at NASA as an Electronic Technician and took pride in the parts he made for the Apollo missions. Dixie received several service awards for his work during his time there.
His services will be handled by Berryhill Funeral Home. He will lie in state at Gurley United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 7th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with service to follow at 1:00. The interment will be at Huntsville Memory Gardens with military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gurley United Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank his caregivers over the last three years for their tireless service and countless hours they put in to caring for Dixie: Linda Stanley, Tricia Gipson, Minnie Norman, Brenda Buchanan, Jessie Lee and Becky Deerman.
