Did You Know….More Than An American Flag Was Left On The Moon

images (2)Here are a few random things you’d think people wouldn’t bother bringing with them to the moon.

Astronaut Charles Duke brought a photo of his family with him to the moon but the sunlight, temperature and radiation on the moon are so intense, the photo faded.

A piece of lava rock from Devil’s Lake in Bend, Oregon was used to practice the collection of rock samples. A building inspector and an astronaut were paired up. Five years later, when he found out he was going to the moon, the building inspector as the astronaut to take the rock with him.

David Scott, Alfred Worden and James Irwin started the first space-based chapter of the U of M (University of Michigan) Alumni Association.

Apollo 12 went to the moon with a little ceramic tile that had drawings from six influential artists on it including, Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Forrest Myers, and Andy Warhol. Warhol’s crude drawing can be seen at the top left.

A sculpture was created to commemorate those who died in pursuit of space travel. It was created by Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck and its the first sculpture on the moon.

Alan Bartlett Shepard was the fifth and oldest person to walk on the moon and the first to play a round of golf there.

Apollo 11 brought messages from 73 world leaders on its voyage. Queen Elizabeth II was just one of many people who wished the astronauts well.
