DECATUR-The Decatur Police Department issued a press release concerning the arrest of seven people arrested during an ongoing investigation of illegal gambling in Decatur:
“During the past several months, Investigators with the Decatur Police Department’s Vice/Narcotics Unit received numerous citizen complaints of illegal gambling and drug activity from a building in the 1000-block of Hoover Ave. SW. The Decatur Police Department also responded to multiple calls for service in this area regarding disturbances, gunshots, and reckless driving. During the investigation, the unit was able to obtain probable cause for a search warrant of the building.
On June 26, 2023, Vice/Narcotics Investigators executed a search warrant at the residence with the assistance of the Patrol and Criminal Investigation Divisions. During the search, Investigators located approximately 50 illegal gambling devices, an extensive camera and alert system, multiple firearms, a trafficking quantity of opiate pills, and a large quantity of Khat, a narcotic stimulant. The gambling devices were seized pending condemnation proceedings. Due to safety concerns, the fire marshal responded and terminated electricity to the building.
Subsequently, the following subjects were placed under arrest, and charges are as follows:
Maher Algassari Anwaraddin, 31, was charged with trafficking in illegal drugs, unlawful to maintain electric bells, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, illegal possession of prescription drugs, and promoting gambling. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $7,600 bond.
Malik Tyrese Lyons, 23, was charged with simple gambling. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $300 bond.
Damont Jones, 27, was charged with simple gambling. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $300 bond.
Timothy Ikner, 35, was charged with simple gambling. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $300 bond.
Jose Miguel Garcia, 37, was charged with simple gambling. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $300 bond.
Jean Caroline Smith, 74, was charged with simple gambling. She was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $300 bond.
Andres Pedro Franc, 42, was charged with public intoxication. He was transported to the Morgan County Jail to be held in lieu of a $300 bond.
“The defendants are accused of the above crimes and should be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
The Decatur Police Department is requesting assistance from the community in locating Bander “Mario” Mohamed, 42, of Madison. Mohamed has active warrants for his arrest for trafficking in illegal drugs, unlawful to maintain electric bells, unlawful possession of controlled substance, and promoting gambling. Any information regarding his whereabouts can be forwarded to the Decatur Police Department’s tip line at 256-341-4636.
The Decatur Police Department is actively receiving information regarding other establishments that are promoting gambling and drug distribution. Investigations into these locations are currently underway.”
