DECATUR-On the evening of October 10th, 2023, Decatur Morgan County Tourism hosted its annual meeting at the historic Princess Theatre, transforming the venue into a vibrant 1920s-themed celebration of the area’s rich heritage and promising future. The event was a grand success, showcasing the dedication and achievements of individuals and organizations who have made substantial contributions to the local tourism industry.
The highlight of the evening was President & CEO Danielle Gibson’s presentation of Decatur Morgan County Tourism’s program of work, which underscored their top three initiatives: establishing Decatur as a destination for Outdoor Recreation, a Sports Tourism Destination, and the promotion of their new Visitor Center, which promises to be a gateway to the region’s many attractions.
Among the evening’s highlights were the prestigious awards presented to outstanding members of the tourism and hospitality industry. These awards serve as a testament to the passion and commitment of those who have tirelessly worked to enhance the visitor experience in Decatur and Morgan County.
Legacy Award: The Legacy Award was bestowed upon John Allison, a historian at the Morgan County Archives, in recognition of his significant efforts to preserve and promote the area’s rich history.
Mr. Tourism Award: Ken Garner received the Mr. Tourism Award for his invaluable contributions to the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic, which has become a cherished annual event in Decatur.
Ambassador of the Year Award: Jennifer Amoroso Brown was celebrated as the Ambassador of the Year for her exceptional contributions to Decatur’s online presence and her remarkable photography that captures the essence of the city.
The awards listed below were nominated and voted on by the Decatur Morgan County Hospitality Association and presented by Hospitality Association president Don Dukemineer.
Event of the Year: The 2023 Skeeter Bassmaster High School Combine was honored with the Event of the Year award for its significant contribution to tourism over the past year. This event brought student anglers from far and wide to connect with Colleges and Universities resulting in many scholarships for the aspiring anglers.
Good Neighbor Award – Friend of Tourism: Deloain Burgess received the Good Neighbor Award for his exceptional work with Dine en Blanc, an annual dinner party that has been recognized across the Country.
Tourism Professional of the Year (In Honor of Layna Sorrell): Susan Morrow, representing Yedla Hotels, Dual Director of Sales for the Courtyard by Marriott and the Residence Inn by Marriott, was recognized as the Tourism Professional of the Year for her outstanding contributions to the industry.
The Decatur Morgan County Hospitality Association also took the opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding members of the housekeeping staff who have consistently provided exceptional service to visitors:
- Sherry McNatt – Courtyard by Marriot
- Chelsea Lockwood – Hampton Inn
- Jessica Mayes – Doubletree by Hilton
- Elizabeth “Liz” Kirby – Residence Inn by Marriot
- Taneka Priest- Home 2 Suites
In addition, the association recognized the top three contributing industries that play a pivotal role in the region’s economic growth and development:
- Lockheed Martin
- Norfolk Southern
- United Launch Alliance
