DECATUR-The Decatur Police Department issued a statement concerning the arrest of a suspect who has been charged with murder in the death of a Decatur woman. The suspect was involved in a hit-and-run which resulted in the death of the victim:
“On August 25, 2022 at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Morgan County E911 Center received a call that a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the parking lot of Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, located at 1203 6th Avenue SE.
Patrol officers with the Decatur Police Department’s Patrol Division along with Decatur Fire and Rescue were immediately dispatched to the scene. When officers arrived on scene they found the victim, Sherry Sain, deceased in the parking lot. The driver of the vehicle that struck Sain, identified as Preston Lamar Nelson, 33, of Huntsville, attempted to flee the scene but his vehicle stalled before he was able to escape.
During the course of the investigation, it was found that Nelson pulled into the parking lot and parked in a handicap spot near the front entrance. Nelson sat in his vehicle until Sain walked directly behind his vehicle. When Sain was directly behind Nelson’s vehicle he accelerated rapidly, striking Sain. Nelson continued to accelerate until he struck another vehicle. After striking Sain and the second vehicle, Nelson attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped by a civilian at which point his vehicle became inoperable.
Patrol officers arrived on scene a short time later and detained Nelson. There is no known connection or events between Nelson and Sain that led up to his actions.
Due to the intentional nature of this act, and the actions of Nelson, Sergeant Burleson charged Nelson with Murder. A Morgan County Circuit Judge set Nelson’s bond at $500,000 cash. He is currently being held in the Morgan County Jail.
“The defendant is accused of the above crimes and should be considered innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.”
