Debra Jean Gorman Shaffer, 55, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013, at home in Decatur. She was born December 11, 1957, on Goose Bay Air Force Base in Labrador, Canada, to the late Alfred Eugene and Hazel Imogene Knight Gorman.

A visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ridout’s Brown-Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel with the burial to follow in Decatur City Cemetery.

“Debi” graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Indiana, in 1976. After high school, she relocated to Decatur along with her family. She began a family of her own in 1979 and was soon blessed with three children. Debi was a very kind and gentle soul; she had a loving heart and was always compassionate. She enjoyed crafts, antiques, gardening, and most of all, spending time with her “grandbabies.”

She is survived by three children, Joscelyn S. Hopkins, William A. “Drew” Shaffer and wife, Stacey, all of Decatur, and Katherine D. Shaffer, of Springhill, Tenn.; one sister, Sandra L. Sons of Decatur and one brother, Patrick A. Gorman of Haymarket, Va.; four grandchildren, Bradley, Sara Beth and Tucker Hopkins, and Lily Shaffer, all of Decatur; and three nephews and one niece.

Pallbearers will be her son and other family members.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Her family would like to thank Hospice and her volunteer companions, especially Ms. Barbara Bumpus.
