DEBORAH J. DOUGLAS-BROWN, 76, of Florence passed away at her home June 27, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her memorial service will be Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 1:30 pm, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Florence with the Rev. Dr. Foster Eich and the Rev. Danny Whitehead officiating. She was born in Oak Park, IL, near Chicago.
She received Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in music from Indiana University, followed by a B.S.N. degree in nursing from UNA. She later earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and served as choir director at First United Methodist Church in Florence for several years. She also worked as a critical care nurse at ECM Hospital for many years, was an international flight nurse and held a private pilot’s license.
Debby was fluent in Spanish and taught in schools in El Salvador while in the Peace Corps. She traveled widely in Latin America, India, China, and Southeast Asia. She was always ready for new adventures and challenges in any part of the world and enjoyed serving as a volunteer nurse and medical assistant in New Guinea, Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia.
Debby was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing.
She loved textiles and had a textile collection from Indigenous peoples in Guatemala
She is survived by her husband, Dr. William Brown, her stepdaughter, Jennifer Brown Scott (Eric), Denver, CO, brother, Tim Douglas (Linda), Atlanta, GA, niece, Heather Douglas Allen (Adam), Colorado Springs, CO, nephew, Morgan Douglas (Jessica), Atlanta, GA, and brother-in-law Richard Brown (Delilah), Fairhope, AL.
