KNOXVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Valley Authority encourages residents across the seven-state region to participate in our 90th anniversary celebrations at events across the Tennessee Valley.
TVA was established with the signing of the TVA Act by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 18, 1933. To kick off our celebrations today, on our actual anniversary, TVA employees and retirees participated in a “Day of Service,” volunteering in more than 150 projects at agencies and non-profit organizations across our region.
“Nine decades ago, TVA arose as a force for good – to lift up a struggling region of our nation,” said Jeff Lyash, TVA President and CEO. “TVA was created on a clear mission to benefit the public good. It’s a mission that has stood the test of time.”

our communities, even after they retire, each and every day. We are privileged to serve the communities and people across this region. We look forward to continuing to work together on even more successes in the next 90 years.”
TVA’s employees serve the people of our seven-state region through energy production, environmental stewardship and economic development. This three-fold mission of service has stood the test of time and is as relevant today as ever before.
TVA welcomes the public to join in our 90th celebration, which includes:
- Opportunities for the public to tour several of our historic dams. “Built for the People” tours are being offered on a limited basis at Kentucky Dam, Norris Dam, Pickwick Dam, Fontana Dam, Chickamauga Dam, Wilson Dam and Raccoon Mountain from June into September. Anyone interested in joining a tour can sign up at www.tva.com/90. Names will be drawn at random for each of the tours and individuals will be notified prior to the dates of the tours.
- And if you’ve ever dreamed of a road trip to check out the best spots across the Tennessee Valley, we have you covered with Pat & Ashley’s Excellent Adventure! TVA Historian Pat Ezzell and Social Media Specialist Ashley Walker will hit the road in July, making stops at some of the most interesting and significant places across our region. - TVA is also bringing the festivities to communities throughout the summer. Look for our booths at locations including Riverbend Music Festival in Chattanooga, HydroFest in Guntersville, Alabama, the Tennessee State Fair, and the Asian Festival in Knoxville.
