David Allan Wing departed this life February 9, 2024, in Jackson, TN, at the age of 75. As we mourn his loss, we celebrate the extraordinary life he lived and the impact he made on the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, his students, and countless others.
He was born on September 19, 1948, in Chicago, IL to the late Richard and Darlene Cross Wing.
Throughout his career in the sciences, David Allan Wing expanded the horizons of biochemistry through research and collegiate academia. His research contributions will continue to resonate for years to come. As a professor at Grand Canyon University, Crichton University, then finally at Union University, he mentored countless students and left an indelible mark on their educational journeys. Many have gone on to follow in his footsteps, carrying forward the passion and dedication he instilled. He enjoyed serving as a PhD candidate and student research advisor throughout his academic career. David was an active member in the American Chemical Society for 53 years with active participation in the Kentucky Lakes Chapter of the ACS during his years living in Tennessee.
Guiding students and aspiring researchers on their path to excellence brought him immeasurable satisfaction. His tireless commitment to mentorship empowered others to unlock their potential and make their mark in the scientific community as well.
Education formed the foundation of David’s illustrious career. In 1970, he earned his undergraduate degree from Wheaton College. Recognizing his talent and unwavering commitment to academic excellence, David embarked on a path of further learning and accomplishment and completed his PhD at Northwestern University in 1977, then went on to complete a post doctoral fellowship in chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. The realms of knowledge that David explored during his years as a student laid the groundwork for his future achievements.
David’s scientific contributions extended beyond academia; he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and the Army Reserves where he conducted research projects at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA, USAMRICD facilities at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in MD,and USAMRIID facilities in Frederick, MD. His military service showcased not only his bravery but also honed research and teaching skills that would later be utilized throughout his multifaceted career.
A man of many passions and talents, David was an avid music lover. Throughout his whole life, he delighted in playing various instruments, including the French horn. Music also played a key role in David meeting his wife of 53 years, RuthEllyn Wing, after they met in a band at Wheaton College during their undergraduate studies. David lent his talents to numerous bands and orchestras over the course of his life. Most recently, he was a part of the orchestra of his own church, First Baptist Church of Jackson, and the Jackson Area Community Band.
Amidst all these accomplishments and pursuits, it was David’s dedication to family that stood out most prominently. A loving husband and father, he was unwavering in his support for his wife and four children. Whether attending their concerts or cheering them on from the sidelines during sporting events, David’s family was always his greatest source of joy and pride.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Ruth Ellyn Wing; children, Emily Katherine Capper (Andrew), Rebecca Ellyn Socia (Theodore), Daniel Allan Wing (Kristen), Matthew Tyler Wing (Danielle), and siblings, William Wing (Lisa), Susie Wing, and Laurie Howard (Alan); and grandchildren, Avery Socia, Anderson Socia, Taliah Wing, Katelyn Capper, Scarlett Wing, Ryker Wing, Michael Capper, Archer, Wing, and Juliette Wing.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church Jackson with dates to be determined.
As we say goodbye to David Allan Wing, we remember his dry wit, passion for music and trains, a dedication to education and teaching, but most importantly, his love for his family. May his legacy be forever treasured by those whose lives he touched. Let us honor his memory by continuing to pursue knowledge with the same tenacity and dedication that defined his life. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
