The elegant life of a lady, Cornelia La Verne Williams Goodloe born Nov. 29, 1935, came to a peaceful end on Monday morning, Oct. 30, 2017, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Alex and Lucinda Williams; her beloved husband, Mr. Curtis Goodloe; two sisters, Mary Williams and Alice Williams; and two brothers, James Alexander Williams and William Edward (Billy) Williams.
La Verne was a graduate of Burrell Slater High School. She also graduated from Poro Beauty College, Detroit Michigan, where she became a licensed beautician. She also participated in continuing education for Head Start through Tuskegee Institute and Sanford University. Mrs. Goodloe had always been one to work. She ran a successful home-based business as a beautician. She also worked at Frigdo, Stylon, and W.C. Handy Head Start from which she retired.
She gave her life to Christ at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church and moved her membership to Bethel Lauderdale Missionary Baptist Church. Later she became a chartered member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Florence, Alabama. She served as president of senior choir for many years, a member of the Pastors Aide Club, Deacon Wives Club, and worked with the youth. She also chaired numerous programs such as the pastors anniversary, women’s day, and church anniversary.
La Verne was a lady who loved caring for children, friends, and family members. Mrs. Goodloe had deep dedication to the children at the W.C. Handy Head Start Program. She was an excellent caregiver for both of her parents while working outside of the home. She also gave much of her time to her cousin, nieces, nephews, and other family members. She adopted many children in her neighborhood and her church by always giving time, gifts, and any other things that they might have needed. The lady also loved beautiful things and maintained a beautiful home.
She leaves to cherish her wonderful memories a loving and devoted daughter, Rena Renell Roy, Florence, Alabama; two godchildren, Allysen Khrystin Williams and Khloe Addysen Williams, both of Florence, Alabama; one sister, Jessiephine Summerville, Southfield, Michigan; one brother, Darrell Williams, Shaker Heights, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Louise Hyler, Tuscumbia, Alabama, Mrs. Dorothy Goodloe, Sheffield, Alabama, and Mrs. Linda P. Williams, Florence, Alabama; two nephews, Jerome Johnson, Springfield, Massachusetts, and Kelvin Goodloe, Decatur, Alabama; seven nieces, Shonna La Vae Hill, Florence, Alabama, Nanette Scruggs and Jaleesa Belue, both of Huntsville, Alabama, Linda Hyler Sistruck, Tuscumbia, Alabama, Deborah A, Gurley, Huntsville, Alabama, Stephanie Goodloe, Denver, Colorado, and Regina McCanelly, Dallas, Texas; three dedicated caregivers, Tisha Harden, Killen, Alabama, Shelia Johnson, Florence, and Brenda Moore, Sheffield, Alabama, and Helen Keller Hospice.
Visitation with the family will be today, 6-8 p.m., at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama. Funeral services for Mrs. Goodloe will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at First Missionary Baptist Church, Florence, Alabama. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Garden, Florence, Alabama. The public viewing will be today, noon-8 p.m.
