LEIGHTON-Celebrate the rich history of LaGrange College at the annual Recall LaGrange event,
happening on May 4, 2024, at the historic site of Alabama’s first college and military institute. This year
marks the 161st anniversary of the tragic burning of LaGrange College. The event promises a full day of
living history presentations, Civil War reenactments, arts and crafts vendors, musical performances, and
much more.
A highlight of the event is the historically accurate reenactment of a Prohibition Era raid on a suspected
moonshine still, set to unfold at 2 p.m. Saturday in the pioneer village. Attendees will witness an intense
skirmish between lawmen and locals, offering a vivid glimpse into the era’s spirited confrontations. Also,
the Lagrange Cemetery Drama will run continually from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Transportation to the
cemetery will be provided.
Since 1988, the LaGrange Living Historical Association has organized many events, including the
LaGrange Distillery Raid. The festival features a diverse lineup of activities including educational lectures,
arts and crafts, food vendors, and live music. The annual gathering takes place on the first Saturday of
May each year.
The festival is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are welcomed at the gate
to support the maintenance of the historic cemetery and park.
Louise Lenz of the LaGrange Living Historical Association invites everyone to attend: “We are thrilled to
offer visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the Prohibition Era raid. This event not only
entertains but also educates attendees about the storied past of LaGrange College.”
